In 2021, Pope Francis established the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly to be celebrated every July near the liturgical Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus. This special day honours the wisdom, faith, and enduring love of our elders — the spiritual pillars of our families and Church communities.
This year, we will mark the day on Sunday, July 27, 2025, under the theme: “Blessed are those who have not lost hope” (Sirach 14:2)
This theme invites us to recognize and cherish the hope-filled witness of grandparents and the elderly — those who remain steadfast in their faith, even in the face of trials, and continue to share their strength and love with the next generation.
🔔 How We’re Celebrating in Our Parish On Sunday, July 27, 2025, we will offer a special prayer during the Divine Liturgy for all grandparents and elderly members of our community — especially those who have passed the faith on to us.
💬 We invite everyone — especially families with children and youth — to join in this prayer and celebration of gratitude for those who have shaped our lives with wisdom and love.
On Saturday, July 5, a Panakhyda (memorial service) was held at St. Michael’s & All Saints Cemetery in Chemainus to mark the one-year anniversary of the falling asleep in the Lord of Fr. Steven Basarab.
The service was prayerfully led by Fr. Yuriy Vyshnevskyy and Fr. Joe Ostopowich, Fr. Stepan Vytvytskyi.
Family members, parishioners, and friends gathered to remember Fr. Steven’s life and ministry — a life marked by dedication, humility, and unwavering love for the Church and her people. His presence and service touched many hearts, especially in the Vancouver Island region where he ministered faithfully for many years.
In the Panakhyda prayers, we asked the Lord to grant Fr. Steven rest among the righteous, and to comfort those who continue to mourn his passing.
We carry the memory of Fr. Steven with deep respect and affection. His spiritual fatherhood, kindness, and quiet strength continue to live on in the hearts of those he served.
May our prayers rise like incense, and may his soul dwell in peace and light. Вічная пам’ять! – Memory eternal!
The Holy Father Leo XIV received the bishops of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC in audience. After speaking, the Pope asked the Ukrainian bishops to sing the “Our Father” in Ukrainian, which he was very pleased to hear on Saturday. His Beatitude Sviatoslav handed over to Pope Leo the lists of prisoners of war. From the Synod, the Pope received a gift of an icon of Archangel Michael, the patron saint of Kyiv.
“Pilgrims of Hope” Gather Again in Faith and Fellowship June 27–28, 2025
With hearts full of gratitude and joy, nearly 100 pilgrims from across British Columbia and Alberta gathered in Grindrod for the 2nd Annual Eparchial Pilgrimage. This year’s event was united under the Jubilee Year theme: “Pilgrims of Hope.”
A special focus of this year’s pilgrimage was the 150th anniversary of the martyrdom of the Blessed Martyrs of Pratulin. A spiritual highlight was the presence of first-class relics of the Pratulin Martyrs. Pilgrims had the opportunity to venerate the relics, pray a specially prepared Moleben in their honour, and listen to their inspiring story, movingly shared by Fr. Andrzej Wasylinko.
The first day of the pilgrimage was filled with meaningful and engaging activities. Pilgrims were divided into four small discussion groups by language and age, allowing for deeper conversations on the Jubilee Year’s significance and the heroic witness of the Blessed Martyrs who gave their lives for their fidelity to the Catholic Church.
The beautiful evening of prayer, which has begun with the Festal Vespers and Lytia dedicated to Sts. Peter and Paul, concluded by a torch-lit procession to the cemetery for a Panakhyda (memorial service) led by Grindrod Pastor Fr. Andriy Werbowy. This prayerful moment of remembrance and unity deeply touched all who attended. The evening ended with a joyful campfire gathering, complete with singing, storytelling, and spiritual reflections led by Fr. Andriy Chornenkyi and Fr. Yuriy Sakvuk. Children delighted in roasting marshmallows, while youth sang together around the fire, embodying the warmth and fellowship of the community.
The second day began with the Blessing of Water, followed by the Main Pilgrimage Divine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m., celebrated by Fr. Mykhailo Ozorovych, who represented Bishop Michael as the main celebrant and homilist. A particularly joyful moment came at the conclusion of the Liturgy, when the community honoured Sr. Angelica Hodowansky on her 90th birthday—a testament to her 73 years of faithful monastic life and prayerful witness.
Pilgrims were once again blessed to venerate the relics of the Blessed Martyrs of Pratulin, and also had the rare opportunity to venerate an Icon of Christ the Pantocrator, blessed by Pope Leo in Rome and brought to Grindrod by Fr. Ozorovych.
Although Bishop Michael could not be physically present due to his participation in the Synod of our Church in Rome, his support and spiritual presence were felt deeply throughout the pilgrimage. He remains one of the strongest advocates for making this annual pilgrimage a lasting tradition in our Eparchy.
We extend heartfelt thanks to the Grindrod parish community (that celebrated their Praznyk last Saturday), whose tireless efforts, joyful hospitality, and deep faith helped make this year’s pilgrimage both spiritually enriching and memorably joyful.
У неділю Всіх святих, 15 червня 2025 року, у храмі Софії Премудрості Божої Українського католицького університету у Львові відбулася Божественна Літургія, яку очолив владика Михайло (Квятковський), єпископ Нью-Вестмінстерської єпархії (Канада) та голова Патріаршої катехитичної комісії. Цим богослужінням розпочався фінальний етап всецерковної інтелектуальної гри «Пошук істини» на патріаршому рівні. Участь у грі взяли команди-переможці попередніх етапів з єпархій і екзархатів УГКЦ в Україні, а також онлайн-учасники з-за кордону. У своїй змістовній проповіді владика Михайло говорив про святість як про щоденний вибір, про силу катехизації, роль Святого Духа та свідчення віри в умовах сучасних викликів, зокрема — війни.
Визнати Христа у світі — означає жити вірою щодня
Святість — це не тільки велике мучеництво, а й повсякденна вірність Христові у словах і вчинках. Кожна дія, навіть найменша, може бути свідченням віри. Бути християнином — означає дозволити Христові жити у собі, впливати на наші вибори, ставлення до інших, служіння ближнім.
Євангелізація через стиль життя
Владика наголосив, що справжня євангелізація — це не лише проголошення, а спосіб життя, у якому пульсує Божа любов. Щоденна радість, підтримка стражденних, життя за принципами милосердя — усе це і є жива проповідь у світі.
Святість як альтернатива світським цінностям
Життя святих — це не ідеалізована казка, а реальне свідчення, що людина може поставити Бога вище за матеріальні здобутки. Так і сьогодні: є ті, хто відмовляється від вигід заради служіння — волонтери, місіонери, катехити, захисники правди.
Катехизація як шлях до глибокої зустрічі з Христом
Катехизація, за словами владики, є процесом глибокого навернення. Вона відкриває віру не як набір знань, а як особисті стосунки з Богом. Вона допомагає розпізнати присутність Бога у найскладніших обставинах.
Святий Дух — дія Божої любові в нашому житті
Святий Дух провадить, зміцнює, просвітлює. Його дія — у маленьких чудесах, у силі прощення, в готовності до жертовності. Завдяки Духові навіть у темряві ми маємо внутрішнє світло, яке провадить уперед.
Хрест війни — як шлях освячення
Особливо сильно владика промовляв про сучасні виклики в Україні. Хрест війни, міграції, невизначеності — це не лише страждання, а й простір свідчення віри. Новітні мученики та вірні, що не зраджують Церкву й Батьківщину навіть під тиском — це справжні святі нашого часу.
Приклади для наслідування — від святих до сучасників
Проповідник нагадав про святих Бориса і Гліба, святого Йосафата, святого Миколая Чудотворця та святу Терезу з Калькути. Їхнє життя — приклад радикальної вірності, жертовності та любові. Сучасні волонтери, які живуть цією самою логікою, є живим продовженням цих прикладів.
Катехит — не лише учитель, а свідок
Цитуючи документи Церкви, зокрема Catechesi Tradendae Івана Павла ІІ та Evangelii Nuntiandi Павла VI, владика наголосив, що катехизація повинна вести до особистої зустрічі з Христом, зрощувати віру в серці, а не лише в інтелекті.
Святість як плодоношення Духа
Наприкінці владика закликав просити Святого Духа про силу та просвітлення, щоб нести віру навіть у час війни, бути вірними, жертовними, радісними свідками Істини. «Прийди, Святий Дух, і веди нас дорогами істинної святості та любові», — цими словами завершилася його проповідь.
Сьогодні, 13 червня, владика Михайло (Квятковський), єпископ Нью-Вестмінстерської єпархії та голова Патріаршої катехитичної комісії УГКЦ, зустрівся в Брюховичах з учасниками XIV спецкурсу місійного служіння для семінаристів передостаннього року навчання, який щорічно організовує Пасторально-міграційний відділ УГКЦ.
У своєму зверненні єпископ поділився досвідом катехизації в умовах міграції в Канаді. Він пригадав, що особливо плідним часом для катехитичного служіння було літо — період інтенсивного і радісного навчання, який завершувався Першим Святим Причастям. «Таким був стиль нашого душпастирювання. Однак через пандемію COVID-19 багато таких шкіл припинили існування і тепер поволі відновлюються», — зазначив владика.
Єпископ також розповів про нові виклики, що постали перед канадськими громадами УГКЦ з початком повномасштабної війни в Україні. До спільнот прибули нові вірні, зокрема діти та молодь, які потребують катехизації. У цьому контексті владика наголосив на важливості ролі катехитів, від яких залежить здатність «розпізнати потреби і можливості своїх спільнот».
Заступник голови Патріаршої катехитичної комісії пан Назар Дуда представив учасникам курсу катехитичні документи УГКЦ та розповів про систему підготовки катехитів. За його словами, нині в катехитичних програмах навчається 250 студентів: 100 — у західних областях України, 50 — у східних, і ще 100 — за кордоном.
Того ж дня владика Михайло очолив Божественну Літургію зі студентами-семінаристами English Summer School у Львівській духовній семінарії Святого Духа.
Окрім цього, у Жовкві відбулася зустріч владики Михайла з владикою Петром (Лозою), єпископом Сокальсько-Жовківської єпархії. Архиєреї обговорили стан катехитичного служіння у своїх єпархіях та окреслили можливі напрями співпраці.
