Наближаючись до великого свята Пасхи, яке наш Катехизм називає «Празником празників» (Христос — наша Пасха, 559), ми готуємося до нього з радістю. Але для багатьох із нас ця радість затьмарена війною в Україні, загрозами інших воєн, а також непевністю та ослабленням моральних орієнтирів у середовищі, що нас оточує.
У такі часи людина може відчувати безсилля — у власному житті або серед інших людей у суспільстві, де вона живе. Ми подібні до учнів Христа під час Його страстей: стоїмо осторонь, розгублені й налякані, не розуміючи того, що відбувається. Або як Божа Мати, жінки та Іван біля хреста — дивимося і не можемо нічого змінити, бачачи, як Господь віддає Себе з любові до нас. Проте, хоч би що ми відчували сьогодні, досвід історії показує: темні часи минають, і навіть найважчі війни завершуються.
Наш спокій не походить від очікування, що світ сам по собі стане кращим. Ми знаходимо мир у світлі нашої віри. Христос дає нам надію і нове життя. Він показав це через Свої страсті й воскресіння, які ми особливо переживаємо в цей час. Це слово надії живе в Євангелії та в навчанні Церкви. Ми покликані його зрозуміти й жити ним, ділячись зі світом, який сьогодні цього потребує.
Одним із найсильніших моментів церковного року є ніч між Великою Суботою та Великоднем. Ми входимо до темного храму, вшановуємо Плащаницю і роздумуємо над тим, що Христос зробив для нашого спасіння. Потім Плащаницю переносять до вівтаря, і ми виходимо з храму, залишаючи позаду знаки смерті та смутку — хрест, гріб, темні багряні накриття. Коли виходимо, співці починають урочисто співати стихири, які розповідають про ангелів, що вже співають про воскресіння Спасителя. Ми просимо Господа дозволити нам на землі приєднатися до цього ангельського хору, бо наші власні душі волають, бажаючи увійти в цю радість.
Ми обходимо храм у прохолодній передсвітанковій темряві. Стаємо перед зачиненими дверима і знову проголошуємо нашу віру у воскресіння. Священник тричі стукає у двері, вони відчиняються, і ми входимо до храму вже з іншим розумінням. Гріб відсунений, темрява змінюється світлом — свічками, квітами, вишитими рушниками. Уся спільнота сміливо та радісно співає, проголошуючи: Христос воскрес! Смерть переможена! І гріб більше не є кінцем життя. Господь Своєю любов’ю і жертвою дав нам це.
Нехай кожен у Церкві та за її межами переживе цей досвід. Нехай Великдень — чи скромний, чи урочистий — дасть нам ту радість і надію, які потрібні сьогодні. Багато хто думає, що ми живемо в часах, про які сказано у 24-му розділі Євангелія від Матея, де Господь говорить про часи темряви та хаосу. Але в цей пасхальний час варто також подивитися на 28-й розділ — розділ надії та сміливості. Бо Господь прийшов у наш світ, щоб вивести нас до нового життя з Ним, де страждання минає і смерті більше немає. «…від смерти бо до життя, і від землі до небес, Христос Бог нас перевів!» (Пісня 1, Канон Пасхи).

Christ is Risen! Indeed, He is Risen!
Dearly Beloved in Christ!
As we approach the great feast of Easter, which our Catechism rightly describes as the “feast of feasts” (Christ our Pascha, 559), we want to engage in joyful preparation. Yet, for many of us, the desire for the natural happiness of the season is clouded by the war in Ukraine, other looming conflicts, and the social and moral uncertainty within our own society.
At such a time, we may come to feel powerless, whether in our own personal lives or gathered with others in the society in which we presently find ourselves. We are somewhat like the Lord’s disciples at the time of the Passion—standing at a distance, confused and afraid, observing an unthinkable turn of events. Or we are like the Mother of God, the women, and John at the foot of the cross, standing helplessly and gazing upon the King of Kings, Who sacrifices all out of His love for us. However, no matter what we may be feeling in the present day, history tells us that dark times do eventually pass and even the most barbarous wars always end.
Our comfort, however, is not derived from waiting for an inevitably better wave of human civilization. We derive peace from the light of our Christian faith. Christ clearly gives us a message of hope and new life. He demonstrated this through His life-giving Passion and Resurrection, which we celebrate especially during this season. This message of hope and courage is found in His living Word and pervades the teachings of His Church. We are invited to learn this message well and to participate in its salvific power by sharing it throughout a world that so desperately needs to hear it today.
One of the most dramatic and impressive liturgical practices that we have in our Church year happens in the wee hours between Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. We enter a darkened church, venerate the plashchanytsya (burial shroud of Christ), and contemplate that sad mystery of the Lord’s plan for our salvation. The shroud is taken away to the sanctuary and we exit the church, leaving behind the trappings of death and sorrow—the cross of execution, the tomb, and the mournful purple coverings. As we are leaving, the cantors begin to solemnly chant the hymn that speaks of the angels already singing about the Resurrection of the Saviour. We ask the Lord if we upon the earth may join them in their song, as our own souls cry out to enter into that joy.
We process around the church in the chilly darkness before sunrise. We stand at the closed doors of the church and proclaim, repeatedly, our faith and trust in the Resurrection. After the priest resolutely knocks thrice on the doors, they are flung open and we joyfully enter into a new reality. The tomb is moved aside, and the somber trimmings are replaced by bright candles, flowers, and embroidery. The whole congregation boldly and joyously sings the proclamation: Christ is risen! Death is conquered! And the grave will never be an end to life. Our Lord, by His own love and sacrifice, has won this for us.
May each of the faithful throughout our Church and beyond have such an uplifting experience! May our Easter morning experience—as grandiose or humble as it may be—give each of us the joy and hope that we need for our times. Lately, not a few have wondered if we are passing through the challenges described in the 24th chapter of Matthew’s Gospel, where the Lord speaks of times of darkness and turmoil. Nevertheless, in this Paschal season, let us allow ourselves to also contemplate the 28th chapter of hope and courage. For we are called to always remember that our Lord came into our hopeless world to lead us into the light of a new and resurrected life with Him, where suffering passes and death is no more. “… for Christ our God has taken us from death to life, and from earth to heaven!” (Ode 1, Canon of Pascha).

Christ is risen!
Beloved in Christ!
Today, when the sun rises with dawn and reveals its paschal light, the Church invites us to set out on a journey together with the myrrh-bearing women. They are heading to the tomb – to the place where they witnessed the burial of Jesus Christ: “It was the day of Preparation, and the Sabbath was beginning. The women who had come with him from Galilee followed and saw the tomb and how his body was laid” (Luke 23:54–55).
In the Ode of Paschal Matins, the Church emphasizes a particular haste. Christ was hastily taken down from the cross, hastily buried without the proper honors that even an ordinary person is due: “Then they returned [home] and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment” (Luke 23:56).
And now the women hasten once again: “But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus” (Luke 24:1–3). The words of the canon of Matins confirm that they were hastening not so much to the tomb as to Christ.
The godly-wise women hastened after you with myrrh…
The women disciples followed their Teacher from the very beginning of His preaching in Galilee. Christ Himself leads them to where they never expected to arrive. They are motivated by love and mercy for the Scorned and Deceased One.
Those who followed Christ, listened attentively to His teaching, witnessed various signs – miracles and healings, now become godly-wise myrrh-bearers. This is also our path of Christian discipleship, which we have traveled in a particular way during Great Lent.
Although Christ warned His disciples about what was to happen – betrayal, arrest, unjust conviction, cruel mockery and death on the cross – the myrrh-bearing women were not prepared either for the horror of the passion, or for an encounter with the risen Lord. They come to the tomb with indescribable pain in their heart and their soul crying out.

Like the myrrh-bearing women, our people have come to this paschal moment with sorrow in their hearts. We experience ever deeper pain and ever greater fatigue from this sacrilegious war.
Many women of Ukraine, setting out on their paschal journey to Christ, rush to the graves of our Heroes and innocent victims of enemy attacks. But this paschal longing for Christ especially cries out to the Lord through the mouths of the families of those missing-in-action and those who have not been able to bury their dead. One mother shared her grief with me: “My daughter has remained forever under the ruins of Azovstal in Mariupol. When will I be able to bury her?!”
With bitter sadness we search for the bodies of our dead. But we believe in the risen Savior! We believe that Christ, who today triumphantly emerges from the tomb, grants life and resurrection to all our departed. This truth is confirmed by the myrrh-bearing women, whom He leads to an encounter not with one who is dead, but with the living God. They become the first witnesses of the risen Lord Jesus. Only after hearing from the angel that He is risen, and having worshiped, rejoicing in the living God, will they be able to proclaim the mystical Pascha to Christ’s disciples (cf. Mt 28:5–8).
… But, rejoicing, they worshiped you as the living God…
The paschal hate of the myrrh-bearers is now prompted not by the desire to complete the funeral ritual, but by the joy of having experienced an encounter with the living God! They bring news of the Resurrection of Christ, because they themselves had accompanied Christ from His crucifixion, death and burial – to His resurrection.
The true spiritual joy of Pascha does not flow from the fulfillment of an annual ritual. It is born from the personal experience that Christ is alive. He remains present in His Resurrection in the midst of His Church. Today, the Church hurries to convey to each of us the joy of meeting the Risen One, inviting us, together with all of God’s people, to worship in joy the living God, and to proclaim the mystical Pascha to all people. For Christ is risen!
We encounter the living God – our risen Savior – in the Holy Mysteries--Sacraments of Christ’s Church. Since the times of early Christianity, it was on the Easter vigil that the Church in the Sacrament of Baptism gave birth to new Christians.
We prepared for this encounter with the living God with a forty-day fast, and today we approach Holy Communion of the Body and Blood of our Savior, bringing to Him, like fragrant myrrh, our Christian life and the daily witnessing of our faith, renewed by repentance, fasting, and prayer.
To be a Christian in our time means to believe in the resurrection, to share the joy of a personal encounter with Christ, to proclaim to everyone the mysterious Pascha of Christ. That is what it means to proclaim today to everyone we meet our Easter greeting: “Christ is risen!” – and to answer aloud and with conviction: “Truly, He is risen!”
And proclaimed to Your disciples, O Christ, the mystical Pascha!
Pascha is the moment of transformation! We hear how women, filled with pain, sought the Deceased One, but instead found the joy of the Risen One. Today, indeed, in this mystical encounter with the risen Lord in the community of the Church, through the power and action of the Holy Spirit, tears are transformed into joy.
It is important to note that Christ does not eliminate the weeping of the women, does not take away their tears, but transforms them. He transforms their sadness into a place of encounter, which becomes the source of a joy that no one can take away from us.
Christ announced this to the apostles at the Last Supper, saying: “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy… So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you” (John 16:20–22). This is the mystery of Christ’s Pascha: this joy of the heart does not fade but is renewed from generation to generation for those who receive it and share it.
We celebrate Pascha, and therefore, we believe in the victory of life over death. We believe that our sadness will also turn into joy because “Christ is truly risen!” Even though deadly missiles and drones fly in “from the east” every day, we already see that the paschal sun shines above them with heavenly radiance, which carries within itself the pledge of victory and the basis of our hope for the complete liberation and revival of our people.
This light will become a source of strength and endurance for us: in the task of worthily honoring of our fallen Heroes; in the return of our captives to their homes; in the release of illegally detained, forcibly deported and kidnapped Ukrainian children; in finding the missing-in-action; and in healing our physical and spiritual wounds and traumas because “Christ is truly risen!”
With faith in the risen Christ and the power of His holy Resurrection, we will rebuild everything that has been destroyed, return to our native lands and unite the sons and daughters of Ukraine scattered throughout the world because “Christ is truly risen!”
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ! Let me greet each of you on this bright day that the Lord made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it! Today, the victory of the living God is our victory because despite the evil days caused by the forces of darkness, God's love, life and joy remain invincible. We ourselves are witnesses to this.
First of all, I would like to address our soldiers and all those who defend Ukraine, as well as their loved ones. On behalf of our Church, I express my deep gratitude to you for showing steadfastness and indomitability of spirit. I wish you Easter’s joy, victory and peace.
To the families of the dead and missing-in-action, I want to wipe away your tears and strengthen you with paschal faith and hope that the risen Lord embraces your loved ones with His love and rewards with eternal life every sacrifice made out of love for one’s people and neighbor.
I greet all who are presently healing their wounds – physical or spiritual. I entrust you into the loving hands of the heavenly Healer – the risen Christ, who bears wounds on his body as a sign of boundless love, in which you also participate, dear brothers and sisters. I greet our doctors, nurses, rehabilitation specialists and chaplains. I accompany their efforts with daily prayer.
I share the paschal joy with all workers and volunteers of civil infrastructure: energy supply, transport, education, medicine. I greet our authorities and all who work tirelessly to preserve human life and human dignity, the country’s independence and integrity.
I especially greet all our families – domestic Churches, so that in the family circle you may experience paschal joy and peace together: parents with children, youth and the elderly. May the risen Lord be at the center of your family life, so that, having worshiped the living God with joy, you may proclaim to others His faithful and all-conquering love.
I convey paschal greetings and thank those who in Ukraine and abroad continue to support their needy and suffering sisters and brothers materially and morally. I greet and bless our pastors, military, hospital and academic chaplains, as well as our monastic communities, especially in the frontline and combat zones.
I embrace you all – those who celebrate at home and those who are far from their homes. I wish you a joyful and blessed Easter feast, a sincere sharing of the Easter basket, of a tasty blessed egg and lushly colored eggs. May our traditional hayivka dances fill your hearts with joy and a sense of God's peace.
The grace of our Risen Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all!

Христос воскрес!
Дорогі в Христі!
Сьогодні, коли зі світанком сходить сонце і являє своє пасхальне світло, Церква запрошує нас вирушити в мандрівку разом із жінками-мироносицями. Вони прямують до гробу – туди, де були свідками поховання Ісуса Христа: «День цей був п'ятниця, і вже заходила субота. Жінки ж, які були прийшли з Ісусом з Галилеї, ідучи слідом за Йосифом, бачили гробницю і як покладено тіло Ісуса» (Лк. 23, 54–55).
Піснею-молитвою пасхальної утрені Церква підкреслює особливий поспіх. Христа поквапом зняли з хреста, нашвидкуруч поховали без належних почестей, які віддають навіть звичайній людині: «Повернувшись [додому], вони приготовили пахощів та мира, але в суботу, за приписом, відпочивали» (Лк. 23, 56).
І ось жінки знову поспішають: «А першого дня в тижні, рано-вранці, вони прийшли до гробниці, несучи пахощі, що їх вони приготували, й застали камінь, відкочений від гробниці. Ввійшовши, не знайшли тіла Господа Ісуса» (Лк. 24, 1–3). Слова канону утрені підтверджують, що вони поспішали не так до гробу, як за Христом.
Богомудрі жінки з миром слідом за Тобою поспішали…
Жінки-учениці йшли за Вчителем від самого початку Його проповіді в Галилеї. Сам Христос приводить їх туди, куди вони ніколи не сподівалися дійти. Їх спонукає любов і милосердя до Зневаженого і Померлого.
Ті, що ходили за Христом, уважно слухали Його повчання, були свідками різних знаків – чуд і зцілень, тепер стають богомудрими мироносицями. Це також наш шлях учнівства Христового, який ми в особливий спосіб проходили впродовж Великого посту.
Хоча Христос попередив своїх учнів про те, що має статися: зрада, арешт, несправедливе засудження, жорстокі знущання і смерть на хресті – жінки-мироносиці не були готові ні до жахіття страстей, ні до зустрічі з воскреслим Господом. Вони приходять до гробу з невимовним болем серця та криком душі.
… і Тебе, як померлого, зі сльозами шукали…
Подібно до жінок-мироносиць, наш народ прийшов до цієї пасхальної миті зі скорботою у серці. Ми переживаємо щораз глибший біль і щораз більшу втому від цієї святотатської війни.
Багато жінок України, вирушаючи у свою пасхальну мандрівку за Христом, спішать до могил наших Героїв і невинних жертв ворожих атак. Але особливо ця пасхальна туга за Христом волає до Господа устами родин зниклих безвісти й тих, хто не зміг поховати своїх загиблих. Одна мати поділилася зі мною своїм горем: «Моя доня навіки залишилася під руїнами Азовсталі в Маріуполі. Коли ж я зможу її поховати?!».
З гірким сумом ми шукаємо тіла наших загиблих. Але ми віримо у воскреслого Спасителя! Віримо, що всім нашим покійним Христос, який сьогодні переможно виходить із гробу, дарує життя і воскресіння. Цю істину підтверджують жінки-мироносиці, яких Він приводить до зустрічі не з померлим, а з живим Богом. Вони стають першими свідками воскреслого Господа Ісуса. Лише почувши від ангела, що Він воскрес, і поклонившись, радіючи живому Богові, вони зможуть таємну Пасху благовістити Христовим учням (пор. Мт. 28, 5–8).

До пасхального поспіху мироносиць тепер спонукає вже не прагнення доповнити ритуал похорону, а радість від пережитої зустрічі із живим Богом! Вони несуть звістку про Воскресіння Христове, бо самі пройшли разом із Христом від Його розп’яття, смерті й поховання – до Його воскресіння.
Справжня духовна радість Пасхи випливає не з виконання щорічного ритуалу. Вона народжується з особистого досвіду того, що Христос живий. Він і нині присутній у своєму Воскресінні посеред своєї Церкви. Саме сьогодні Церква поспішає передати кожному з нас радість зустрічі з Воскреслим, запрошує нас разом з усім Божим народом поклонитися, радіючи, живому Богові й таємну Пасху благовістити всім людям. Бо Христос воскрес!
Ми зустрічаємо живого Бога – нашого воскреслого Спасителя – у Таїнствах Христової Церкви. Із часів раннього християнства саме в пасхальну ніч Церква народжувала в Таїнстві Хрещення нових християн.
До цієї зустрічі з живим Богом ми готувалися сорокаденним постом і сьогодні приступаємо до Святого Причастя Тіла і Крові нашого Спасителя, несучи Йому, як запашне миро, наше оновлене покаянням, постом і молитвою християнське життя ‒ щоденне свідчення нашої віри.
Бути християнином в наш час означає вірити у воскресіння, ділитися радістю особистої зустрічі з Христом, благовістити всім таїнственну Пасху Христову. Ось що означає промовити сьогодні до кожного, кого зустрінемо, цей пасхальний привіт: «Христос воскрес!» – і гучно та переконливо відповісти: «Воістину воскрес!».
І Пасху таємну Твоїм учням, Христе, благовістили!
Пасха – це момент переміни! Ми чуємо, як жінки, сповнені болю, шукали Померлого, але натомість знайшли радість Воскреслого. Саме сьогодні, у цій таїнственній зустрічі з воскреслим Господом у спільноті Церкви, силою і діянням Святого Духа сльози перетворюються на радість.
Важливо зауважити, що Христос не усуває плач жінок, не відбирає в них сліз, а перемінює їх. Він перетворює їхній смуток на простір зустрічі, що стає джерелом тієї радості, якої ніхто нас не може позбавити.
Про це Христос провіщав апостолам на Тайній вечері, кажучи: «Істинно, істинно говорю вам: Голоситимете, ридатимете, світ же радітиме. Журитиметесь, але журба ваша у радощі обернеться… Оце й ви нині в журбі. Але Я вас знову побачу, і зрадіє ваше серце, і ніхто ваших радощів від вас не відбере» (Ів. 16, 20–22). У цьому й полягає таїнственність Пасхи Христової: ця радість серця не гасне, а оновлюється з покоління в покоління для тих, хто її приймає і нею ділиться.
Ми святкуємо Пасху, а отже, віримо в перемогу життя над смертю. Ми віримо, що і наш смуток обернеться на радість, бо «Христос воістину воскрес!». Попри те, що кожного дня «зі сходу» прилітають смертоносні ракети та дрони, уже бачимо, що над ними сяє небесним сяйвом пасхальне сонце, яке несе в собі запоруку перемоги і підставу нашої надії на повне визволення та відродження нашого народу.
Це світло стане для нас джерелом сили і витривалості: у праці над гідним вшануванням наших полеглих Героїв; у поверненні до рідних домівок наших полонених; у визволенні незаконно утримуваних, насильно депортованих і викрадених українських дітей; у віднайденні зниклих безвісти та у зціленні наших тілесних і душевних ран і травм, бо «Христос воістину воскрес!».
Із вірою в Христа воскреслого та силою Його святого Воскресіння ми будемо відбудовувати все зруйноване, повертати на рідні землі та гуртувати розпорошених по світу синів і дочок України, бо «Христос воістину воскрес!».
Дорогі в Христі браття і сестри! Дозвольте привітати кожного з вас у цей світлий день, що його створив Господь. Радіймо і веселімося в ньому! Сьогодні перемога живого Бога є нашою перемогою, бо незважаючи на лихі дні, спричинені силами темряви, Божа любов, життя і радість залишаються непереможними. Ми самі є свідками цього.
Насамперед прагну звернутися до наших воїнів та всіх, хто захищає Україну, а також до їхніх рідних. Від імені нашої Церкви висловлюю вам глибоку вдячність, що виявляєте стійкість і незламність духу. Бажаю вам великодньої радості, перемоги і миру.
Родинам загиблих і зниклих безвісти хочу втерти сльози та скріпити вас пасхальною вірою і надією на те, що воскреслий Господь обіймає ваших рідних своєю любов’ю і нагороджує вічним життям кожну жертву, принесену з любові до свого народу та до ближнього.
Вітаю всіх, хто зараз лікує свої рани – фізичні чи духовні. Віддаю вас у люблячі руки небесного Цілителя – воскреслого Христа, який на своєму тілі носить рани як знак безмежної любові, у якій і ви берете участь, дорогі брати і сестри. Вітаю наших лікарів, медсестер, реабілітологів і капеланів. Супроводжую їхні зусилля щоденною молитвою.
Ділюся пасхальною радістю з усіма працівниками та волонтерами цивільної інфраструктури: енергопостачання, транспорту, освіти, медицини. Вітаю нашу владу та всіх, хто невпинно працює, щоб зберегти людське життя і людську гідність, державну незалежність і цілісність.
Особливим чином вітаю всі наші родини – домашні Церкви, щоб у родинному колі ви разом відчули пасхальну радість і мир: батьки з дітьми, молодь і старші. Хай воскреслий Господь буде в центрі вашого родинного життя, щоб ви, поклонившись з радістю живому Богові, могли благовістити іншим про Його вірну і всепереможну любов.
Передаю пасхальні вітання і дякую тим, хто в Україні та на поселеннях продовжує підтримувати матеріально й морально своїх потребуючих та стражденних сестер і братів. Вітаю і благословляю наших душпастирів, військових, медичних та академічних капеланів, а також наше монашество, особливо у прифронтовій зоні та зоні бойових дій.
Обіймаю вас усіх – тих, хто святкує вдома, і тих, хто перебуває далеко від рідної домівки. Зичу вам веселих і благословенних Великодніх свят, щирого ділення великоднім кошиком, смачного свяченого яйця та пишних крашанок. Нехай наші традиційні гаївки сповнять ваші серця веселістю та відчуттям Божого миру.
Благодать воскреслого Господа нашого Ісуса Христа, любов Бога Отця і причастя Святого Духа нехай будуть з усіма вами!

We are on the threshold of dramatic events in the course of our Ukrainian liturgical year. Perhaps by time you read this, we will have already contemplated the amazing raising of Lazarus from the tomb (John 11:1-45). This foreshadowing of the very Resurrection of Christ and the resurrection that our Lord promises to each of us (John 5:28-29). Then the joyful entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. This marks the short time that is left until we celebrate the joy of Pascha. Even our Ukrainian tradition this Sunday reflects the hopeful excitement that is already welling in our souls, “I do not strike you, but the branch strikes you, one week until Easter!”
My friends we are about to enter into Passion Week with our Lord. A week of dramatic prayer that is rich in theology and grace. It is not so much a time of commemoration of historic, world-changing events, but it is a joining with the Lord and His Church to implore and obtain today that grace and profound change for us and for this mad world in which we are living. I appeal to you as a brother and fellow traveller… Let us all make the best of this week!
Let us make time and make the effort to travel together! In each of our parish churches there is a schedule of the amazing liturgical services and events that our people have practiced for a thousand years now. The Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts, the opportunity for Sacramental Confession, the Holy Thursday liturgy of the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the Priesthood (an opportunity for us to thank God and to pray for our priests), the Passion Gospels, the Burial of Christ, the watching and praying at the Tomb through the night. Perhaps there are other events, like the Way of the Cross, penitential candlelight walks with the Rosary and the Jesus Prayer, the soul-stirring Jerusalem Matins, etc.
Find out about that schedule and mark all the events on your calendar. Consider including neighbouring parishes to fill-out your plan. Plan to attend everything! Invite your family members and friends and acquaintances to join you. Assure them that they are invited! Regardless of your mood or attitude, come anyway and stand at the back with your arms crossed if you like, simply observing and listening. But come. Your People need you at this time. Your disquieted world needs you. Your Lord, Who loves you, wants you.
There are thousands of “Newcomers” who have come to our Eparchy since Russia’s heartless full-scale invasion four years ago. There are thousands of Ukrainians in Canada who have been here for well over a century now. What if we all made the effort this year to give this week to our Lord as we prepare to celebrate the Resurrection? People in Ukraine are dying every day, as they are in so many other troubled areas of the world. We see an increase of uncertainty and darkness in our world socially, economically and spiritually. Let us… at least us… who have a millennial tradition of Christian faith and culture, come together to be with our Lord throughout Passion Week and to be there at the dawn of His Glorious Resurrection! Trusting, praying and waiting with hope!
I know that our Lord will answer our prayer and grant each of us personal consolation and He will bless Ukraine and our Eparchy with untold grace and new life!
May our Lord grant each of us a profound Passion Week and Easter experience! I hope to see you there.

ДАВАЙТЕ ЗУСТРІНЕМОСЯ В ЦЕРКВІ! ДАВАЙТЕ ПРОВЕДІМО ТАМ ЧАС РАЗОМ З НАШИМ ГОСПОДОМ!
Дорогі брати і сестри у Христі!
Слава Ісусу Христу!
Ми стоїмо на порозі глибоких і визначальних подій у перебігу нашого українського літургійного року. Можливо, на час, коли ви читатимете ці рядки, ми вже роздумували над дивом воскресіння Лазаря з гробу (Йо. 11:1–45) - перед знаменуванням самого Христового Воскресіння і того воскресіння, яке Господь обіцяє кожному з нас (Йо. 5:28–29). Далі - радісний вхід Ісуса до Єрусалима у Квітну неділю, що знаменує короткий час, який залишився до святкування Пасхи. Навіть наша українська традиція цього дня відображає тиху, але глибоку надію, що вже наповнює наші серця: «Не я б’ю - верба б’є, за тиждень Великдень!»
Дорогі у Христі, ми наближаємося до входження разом із Господом у Страсний тиждень - час зосередженої молитви, сповнений богословської глибини і благодаті. Це не лише згадка про історичні події, що змінили світ, але передусім - живе єднання з Господом і Його Церквою, щоб уже сьогодні випросити і прийняти ту благодать і внутрішню переміну, якої потребуємо ми самі і цей тривожний світ, у якому живемо. Звертаюся до вас як брат і співподорожній: проживімо цей тиждень повно і свідомо!
Знайдімо час і докладімо зусиль, щоб пройти цей шлях разом. У кожній нашій парафії укладено розклад богослужінь і духовних подій, які наш народ плекає вже понад тисячу років. Літургія Передосвячених Дарів, можливість приступити до Таїнства Покаяння, богослужіння Великого четверга - встановлення Пресвятої Євхаристії та священства (нагода подякувати Богові і молитися за наших священників), читання Страсних Євангелій, винесення Плащаниці, нічне чування і молитва при Гробі Господньому. Можливо, також відбуватимуться інші молитовні практики: Хресна дорога, покаянні ходи зі свічками під час молитви вервці або Ісусової молитви, зворушлива Єрусалимська утреня та інші.
Довідайтеся про цей розклад і позначте всі події у своєму календарі. Розгляньте можливість долучитися також до богослужінь у сусідніх парафіях, щоб глибше пережити цей час. Намагайтеся бути присутніми якнайповніше. Запрошуйте своїх рідних, друзів і знайомих - дайте їм відчути, що вони бажані і очікувані. Незалежно від вашого настрою чи внутрішнього стану - приходьте. Навіть якщо просто стоятимете в кінці храму, мовчки споглядаючи і слухаючи - прийдіть. Ваш народ потребує вас у цей час. Світ, який шукає миру, потребує вашої молитви. Ваш Господь, Який вас любить, очікує на вас.
Упродовж останніх чотирьох років, відколи триває жорстоке повномасштабне вторгнення росії, тисячі новоприбулих оселилися в межах нашої Єпархії. Водночас тисячі українців у Канаді живуть уже понад століття. Що, якби цього року ми всі разом вирішили присвятити цей тиждень Господеві, готуючись до святкування Його Воскресіння? Щодня в Україні гинуть люди, як і в багатьох інших частинах світу, що переживають біль і неспокій. Ми бачимо зростання невизначеності та темряви - у суспільному, економічному й духовному вимірах. Тож нехай ми, ті, що маємо тисячолітню традицію християнської віри і культури, зберемося разом, щоб бути з Господом упродовж Страсного тижня і зустріти світанок Його славного Воскресіння з довірою, молитвою і надією.
Вірю, що Господь вислухає наші молитви, дарує кожному з нас внутрішню розраду, а Україну та нашу Єпархію благословить невимовною благодаттю і новим життям!
Нехай Господь дарує кожному з нас глибоке пережиття Страсного тижня і світлої Пасхи! Сподіваюся побачити вас там.
