On the weekend of the 7th Sunday after Pentecost, Bishop Michael (Kwiatkowski), accompanied by Sr. Angelica (Hodowanska), SSMI and Volodymyr Mykhalyshyn, made the trip to Kelowna, BC to visit the Parish of the Dormition of the Mother of God.
Kelowna first had a Catholic mission established by the now famous Oblate Missionary, Fr. Pandosy. Ukrainian immigration probably started with the settler influx in the 1920s. It wasn’t until 1948, however, that a Basilian missionary priest from Vernon, Fr. George Zydan, OSBM, founded a mission in Kelowna. They soon had plans to build toward their future and so they set the annual parish membership fee at a whopping $2 (no misprint). The parish was soon entrusted to the pastoral care of a Fr. Wasyl Chopey, and they had their first Parish meeting on 24 January 1949. They decided to start exploring the possibility of building their own church and so they raised the parish membership fee to (are you sitting down?) - $5.
Things moved very fast. Fr. Bohdan Hanushevsky was appointed parish priest of Kelowna (and Vernon) and the mission began to bloom. He even organized a 35 member choir that sang at the world famous Power of Praying the Rosary Crusade led by the Venerable Father Patrick Peyton. [Some will remember his motto, “The Family that Prays together, stays together!”]
The first church was eventually bult by 1954 and the congregation was thrilled to celebrate Easter for the first time in the new building. There were many ups and downs in the history of the parish. Several priests served the people with dedication – and, in some cases, heroically (like a Monsignor Myroslaw Kolodey who retired in 1982, but kept in serving the parish for another five years, because they needed him). A new church was built and officially opened in 1988.
The parish has a rich history of growth and activity. It is truly worth the read.
Today the parish is as active as ever. The Parish Priest, Fr. Pavlo Myts has been pleased to lead the parish through many exciting ventures, including the blessing of many “newcomers” to Kelowna – which the parish do so much to help. The parish hall just underwent a remodeling that brought it to a bright and new standard that makes it a sought-after venue for many events. (and, especially – a place for parishioners to gather for fellowship and parish dinners and events).
On the Seventh Sunday after Easter, 27 July 2025, which was also the world day for Grandparents and the Elderly as well as the Feast of holy Great-martyr and Healer, St. Panteleimon, Bishop Michael made the trip to visit the parish. The parish has two Sunday Divine Liturgies – an earlier one in English and a later one, at 11:00 AM, in Ukrainian. Both liturgies are preceded by a prayerful half-hour of meditational music and the Rosary.
Bishop Michael, with Pastor Fr. Myts concelebrating, served and preached at both services. He presented the highlights of Pope Leo XIV’s message for the World Day of Grandparents and the Elderly. He also invited the congregations to remember to take full advantage of the grace of the JUBILEE YEAR of HOPE and even led them in the Jubilee Year Indulgence prayers.
Being the Feast of St. Panteleimon the Healer, Bishop Michael invited all those present who sought healing for illnesses and wounds – be they spiritual, physical or emotional, be they personal or affecting their marriages or families or their wider circle of associates – to come forward for an anointing of healing. To impress upon the community the significance of the blessing, he even first prayed the prayer of healing from the trebnyk for the sacrament of healing. It was a powerful experience as everyone came forward.
Exaltation of the Holy Cross Parish in Surrey, British Columbia (within the greater Vancouver area) met with Bishop Michael this week to discuss their plans for a vibrant future beyond this Jubilee Year.
Holy Cross Parish has been one of the longer standing and active parishes of the Eparchy of New Westminster. Ukrainian Catholics began settling in the area of the City of Surrey after the Second World War. Records suggest that the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated in Surrey back in 1955 by a Father Markian Bilyk at a local Roman Catholic Church. (Our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters have graciously hosted us so often in times of need from pre-eparchial times.). Fr. Markian was born near Rohatyn, Ukraine, but came to be ordained in Canada and serve the Ukrainian faithful across Canada. It is likely that he travelled from Edmonton on mission tours into British Columbia, during which he would have met with the Ukrainian settlers in the Surrey area and offered them the greatest gift – a Eucharistic Liturgy. Upon completing his life of ministry, he eventually died in Vernon, BC in 1969.
It was in the summer of 1967 that an enterprising woman, Vivian Ostrowercha called a meeting of several families and spoke to them about a meeting that she had with the Bishop of Edmonton, Most Rev. Neil Savaryn about starting a parish in the area. They agreed to the Bishop’s guidance and in the autumn of that same year, a Ukrainian Catholic parish was established in Surrey. Within a few weeks, a schedule of regular Divine Liturgies had been arranged and the first “AGM’ was held and a Parish Council was elected with a Mr. Nick Ostrowercha as the president.
A former Anglican church was purchased in 1970 while the energetic Fr. Bohdan Hanushevsky was serving from New Westminster. As they say, the rest is history. The parish began to thrive with organizations, catechism, youth groups, parish bazars and lotteries and dinners and fundraisers. The church and office building mortgage was paid off by 1988 as the Ukrainian nation celebrate a thousand years of the Christian Faith lifting up their people to this day.
Several priests have served the parish over the years – including Frs. Kratko, Kuzma, Sabara, Chornenkyi, Werbowy and Sakvuk. The present parish priest is Father Mykhailo Postoliuk who was appointed in January of this year.
Holy Cross Parish recently held elections for their Parish Pastoral Council. The executive of that parish council held a meeting with Eparchial Bishop Michael Kwiatkowski to have a frank discussion about our Parish in Surrey and the direction to take for a bright and thriving future.
Several meetings have been held with the Surrey community over the last two years on various levels – either Parish Pastoral Council or the entire parish community. The challenges that the parish now faces is partly due to losing the old church building and residence a couple of years back, the parish again finds itself in a similar situation as in their pioneer years. They have a strong and willing community, but are again holding their services at a local Roman Catholic church and their parish priest is living offsite. Their hope, of course is to once again have their own place of worship, but also a place where they can meet and where catechism classes and other programs can be revived on a more regular basis. With the blessing of the former Bishop, the parish did invest in a large building where they hoped their parish priest could live and where they would have a small place for worship and for parish activity. This was realized for a time and in part, but not to the extent that the parish truly needed. Thus, the meeting.
The meeting this week was one of frank talk and of sharing of hopes and anxieties and crosschecking that with reality. After all of that, the plan was, of course, more than ever, to move forward. The immediate goals can be summed up into two:
1. The Parish Priest, Fr. Mykhailo, together with Parish Council executive will formulate their goals and plan for at least the coming year, AND 2. they will move expeditiously to transform the property that they now own into a source of support for the active parish life that they want for this coming year. This is exciting! This will provide a clear pastoral plan for the immediate future as well as the basic support needed to realize that plan.

On Sunday morning, 20 July 2025, the parishioners of Holy Eucharist Cathedral in New Westminster were pleasantly surprised to have join their congregation Ukraine’s Ambassador to Canada - Her Excellency Yuliya Kovaliv. The Ambassador, with her entourage and local dignitaries – including the President of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress Vancouver, Elvira Mruchkovska and the President and Vice-president of the Ukrainian National Federation Vancouver, Svyatoslav Lashkevych and Volodymyr Mykhalyshyn, respectively.
Bishop Michael welcomed the Ambassador, saying that her presence was not only a joy and an honour for the whole congregation, but certainly a comfort especially for the many newcomers who will be pleased to have a representative of the Government of Ukraine visit them. The Ambassador did meet with the clergy following the Divine Liturgy and then mingled and chatted with all those who came to the auditorium for post-service refreshments and fellowship.
Ambassador Yuliya Kovaliv was appointed as Ukraine’s chief diplomat to Ottawa only a month after Russia shocked the world by escalating it’s 8-year “hybrid” war with Ukraine by initiating a brutal full-scale invasion that has not let up for over three years. As hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians were dying and millions being driven from their homes, Her Excellency Kovaliv played a key role in representing Ukraine’s needs to the Canadian government and people. Yesterday, while not denying Ukraine’s ongoing need for social and material support to regain peace and sovereignty, she unequivocally acknowledged the great support that Canada offered and continues to offer Ukraine and to the many refugees that fled to Canada. In her conversation with Bishop Michael, she did express her hope that the Ukrainian Community in Canada, perhaps especially the faith leadership, would continue to keep in the forefront the need for an end to the war and a just peace that would bring a stop to the horrific destruction that has been visited upon Ukraine and which continues daily to this very moment.
Ambassador Yuliya Kovaliv is nearing the end of her term of service in Canada. The Ukrainian Community on Canada’s Westcoast is grateful for the mutual collaboration that was possible over the last three and a half years for the good of Canada-Ukraine relations and for the wellbeing of newcomers who settled in the territory of our Eparchy. One gesture of acknowledgement came later in the day from the Ambassador who presented a certificate of gratitude to the Eparchy’s “Ridne Slovo” Ukrainian School that has been serving and supporting Ukrainian families in the area for over 10 years now.

Взяти до уваги стан виконання рішень Синоду Єпископів УГКЦ 2024 року.
Прийняти в першому читанні титул «Соціальне служіння» Кодексу канонів УГКЦ.
Затвердити Стратегію просімейної політики УГКЦ.
Для здійснення належного душпастирства сім’ї в умовах війни:
І. На загальноцерковному рівні:
Доручити Патріаршій комісії УГКЦ у справах родини і мирян:
у співпраці з Патріаршою комісією УГКЦ у справах духовенства розробити програму супроводу священничих родин;
продовжити проведення навчально-практичних семінарів у єпархіях та екзархатах щодо реалізації Стратегії просімейної політики УГКЦ з урахуванням попереднього досвіду;
провести науково-практичну національну конференцію, присвячену питанням просімейної та демографічної політики в Україні;
розробити план поширення вчення Католицької Церкви про родину, зокрема із використанням сучасних засобів комунікації;
систематизувати та оприлюднити на офіційних медіаресурсах УГКЦ наявні стратегії, програми, матеріали з душпастирства родини.
ІІ. На єпархіальному рівні:
Просити єпархіальних єпископів:
адаптувати Стратегію просімейної політики УГКЦ до потреб та актуальних викликів місцевих єпархій та екзархатів;
відповідно до постанови № 10 Синоду Єпископів УГКЦ 2014 року, опрацювати – там, де цього ще не зроблено – Єпархіальну програму курсу безпосередньої підготовки до прийняття Таїнства Подружжя, обов’язково охоплюючи такі теми: проголошення керигми про цінність і красу християнського подружжя; богослов’я Таїнства Подружжя; психологія подружжя; біоетичні аспекти подружжя; дар плідності і відповідальне батьківство; канонічне та цивільне право щодо подружжя;
засновувати Родинні центри, забезпечуючи їх належними кадровими та матеріальними ресурсами;
відповідно до постанови № 10 Синоду Єпископів УГКЦ 2014 року, проводити прородинні тематичні прощі, реколекції, семінари задля поглиблення духовного життя членів родин, а також задля плекання і популяризації сімейних цінностей в суспільстві;
засновувати та всіляко підтримувати єпархіальні прородинні рухи, організації і спільноти, забезпечуючи їх належне церковне оформлення, зокрема через затвердження Статутів компетентною церковною владою;
дбати про захист і промоцію сімейних цінностей у взаємодії з органами публічної влади різних рівнів;
подбати про духовний супровід і гуманітарну підтримку особливо вразливих та потребуючих родин, зокрема тих, що постраждали від війни, і родин полеглих захисників, а також вдів і сиріт, самотніх, внутрішньо переміщених осіб, людей похилого віку тощо;
відповідно до постанови № 26 Синоду Єпископів УГКЦ 2016 року, дбати про належний духовний супровід і підтримку священничих родин, звертаючи особливу увагу на дружин спочилих у Бозі священнослужителів та їхніх неповнолітніх або потребуючих дітей;
відповідно до постанови № 5. XIII, п. 1 Синоду Єпископів УГКЦ 2022 року, заохочувати та підтримувати ініціативи, скеровані на опіку сиріт війни, а також на усиновлення дітей, які втратили батьків внаслідок війни;
налагодити і розвивати співпрацю з інституціями, які працюють на благо української сім’ї як в Україні, так і на поселеннях.
ІІІ. На парафіяльному рівні:
Доручити душпастирям:
відповідно до постанови № 10 Синоду Єпископів УГКЦ 2014 року та постанови № 5. XIII Синоду Єпископів УГКЦ 2022 року, дбати про належну підготовку наречених до Таїнства Подружжя через відповідні курси, які є однією з необхідних передумов для його уділення, та надавати духовний супровід під час цього навчання;
засновувати при парафіях затверджені церковною владою подружні спільноти та родинні рухи задля підтримки подружніх пар і сімей, а також для їх активнішої участі в парафіяльному житті;
відповідно до постанови № 5. XIII Синоду Єпископів УГКЦ 2022 року, приділяти особливу увагу духовному супроводу подружніх пар у перші роки подружнього життя, а також сімей, які переживають труднощі чи кризи;
у світлі Євангелія та Вчительського уряду Церкви розвивати душпастирську опіку над розлученими особами, які живуть у нових сімейних зв’язках;
організовувати літні табори для подружніх пар і сімей, а також реколекційні зустрічі, присвячені духовності християнського подружжя і християнської сім'ї;
відповідно до постанови № 5. XIII, п. 2 Синоду Єпископів УГКЦ 2022 року, виявляти особливу турботу та душпастирську увагу щодо родин захисників, загиблих, зниклих безвісти, полонених і військових ветеранів, а також вдів і сиріт, внутрішньо переміщених осіб, людей похилого віку та осіб з особливими потребами;
практикувати душпастирські відвідини в різдвяний час, богослужіння з нагоди річниць укладення Таїнства Подружжя, ювілеїв подружнього життя тощо – як дієвий засіб духовного супроводу родин;
шукати способи залучення членів мішаних подружжів до активнішого церковного життя;
впроваджувати – там, де ще цього не зроблено – родинну катехизацію, зокрема катехизацію батьків і хресних батьків у межах підготовки до Таїнств Хрещення та Миропомазання їхніх дітей, а також підготовки дітей до першої Сповіді і урочистого Святого Причастя;
використовувати різні нагоди впродовж літургійного року для проповідування євангельської науки та вчення Католицької Церкви про християнську родину як «незгасне вогнище життя і здоров'я Церкви та Народу» (патріарх Йосиф «Заповіт»);
з нагоди родинних свят і ювілеїв подружнього життя проводити відповідні богослужіння та виголошувати науки про красу і цінність християнського подружжя;
організовувати паломництва родин до визначних духовних центрів УГКЦ в Україні та на поселеннях.
Взяти до уваги напрацювання Патріаршої літургійної комісії УГКЦ з оновлення тексту Архиєратикону та просити членів Синоду Єпископів УГКЦ подати свої зауваження до цього тексту до 15 жовтня 2025 року Божого
Взяти до уваги напрацювання Патріаршої літургійної комісії УГКЦ над оновленням Требника та поблагословити її на подальшу працю.
Взяти до уваги напрацювання робочої групи Патріаршої літургійної комісії УГКЦ і представників Чину святого Василія Великого над оновленням тексту Молитвослова та поблагословити продовження цієї праці.
Надати згоду Отцю і Главі УГКЦ на затвердження українського тексту Требника Чинів великого екзорцизму.

To take into consideration the state of implementation of the decisions of the 2024 Synod of Bishops of the UGCC.
To adopt in the first reading the Title “Social Ministry” of the Code of Canons of the UGCC.
To approve the UGCC Pro-Family Policy Strategy.
To implement appropriate pastoral care of the family in the conditions of war:
At the church-wide level:
To entrust the Patriarchal Commission of the UGCC for Family and Laity Affairs with:
developing a program to support priestly families, in cooperation with the Patriarchal Commission of the UGCC for Clergy Affairs;
continuing to conduct educational-practical seminars in eparchies and exarchates regarding the implementation of the UGCC Pro-Family Policy Strategy, taking into account accumulated experience;
holding a scholarly-practical national conference dedicated to pro-family and demographic policy issues in Ukraine;
developing a plan to disseminate the teaching of the Catholic Church on the family, in particular using modern means of communication;
systematizing and publishing on the official media platforms of the UGCC existing strategies, programs, and materials on family ministry.
At the eparchial level:
To ask the eparchial bishops to:
adapt the UGCC Pro-Family Policy Strategy to the needs and current challenges of local eparchies and exarchates;
in accordance with Resolution No. 10 of the 2014 Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, develop — where this has not yet been done — an Eparchial Program-course for immediate preparation to receive the Sacrament of Matrimony, necessarily covering the following topics: kerygmatic proclamation on the value and beauty of Christian marriage; the theology of the Sacrament of Matrimony; psychology of marriage; bioethical aspects of marriage; the gift of fertility and responsible parenthood; canonical and civil law regarding marriage;
establish Family Centers, providing them with appropriate staffing and material resources;
in accordance with Resolution No. 10 of the 2014 Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, conduct pro-family themed pilgrimages, retreats, and seminars to deepen the spiritual life of family members, as well as to foster and popularize family values in society;
establish and in every way support eparchial pro-family movements, organizations, and communities, ensuring their proper ecclesial formation, in particular, through the approval of Statutes by competent church authorities;
ensure the protection and promotion of family values in cooperation with public authorities at various levels;
provide spiritual accompaniment and humanitarian support to particularly vulnerable and struggling families, in particular, to those affected by the war and to families of fallen defenders, as well as to widows and orphans, the lonely, internally displaced persons, the elderly, etc.
in accordance with Resolution No. 26 of the 2016 Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, provide proper spiritual accompaniment and support to priestly families, paying special attention to the wives of priests who have fallen asleep in the Lord and to their minor or in-need children;
in accordance with Resolution No. 5. XIII, paragraph 1 of the 2022 Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, encourage and support initiatives aimed at caring for war orphans, as well as for the adoption of children who have lost their parents as a result of the war;
establish and develop cooperation with institutions that work for the benefit of the Ukrainian family both in Ukraine and abroad.
At the parish level:
To entrust parish clergy with:
ensuring, in accordance with Resolution No. 10 of the 2014 Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, and Resolution No. 5. XIII of the 2022 Synod of Bishops, the proper preparation of a bride and groom for the Sacrament of Marriage through appropriate courses, which are one of the mandatory prerequisites for its celebration, and providing spiritual accompaniment throughout this preparation;
establishing, in parishes, church-approved married couple communities and family movements dedicated to supporting married couples and families, and to promoting their more active participation in parish life;
in accordance with Resolution No. 5. XIII of the 2022 Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, paying special attention to the spiritual accompaniment of married couples in the first years of married life, and also of families experiencing difficulties or crises;
in the light of the Gospel and the Magisterium of the Church, developing pastoral care for divorced persons living in new family relationships;
organizing summer camps for married couples and families, as well as retreat encounters dedicated to the spirituality of Christian marriage and the Christian family;
in accordance with Resolution No. 5. XIII, paragraph 2 of the 2022 Synod of Bishops of the UGCC, showing special care and pastoral attention to the families of defenders, the deceased, those missing in action, prisoners and military veterans, as well as to widows and orphans, internally displaced persons, the elderly and people with special needs;
conducting pastoral visits at Christmas time, divine services on the occasion of anniversaries of the Sacrament of Marriage, anniversaries of married life, etc.—as an effective means of spiritual accompaniment of families;
seeking ways to involve mixed-couple marriages in more active church life;
introducing — where this has not yet been done — family catechization, in particular, catechization of parents and godparents within the framework of preparation for the Sacraments of Baptism and Chrismation of their children, as well as preparation of children for first Confession and solemn Holy Communion;
using various opportunities during the liturgical year to preach the teaching of the Gospel and the teaching of the Catholic Church on the Christian family as “an unquenchable hearth of life and health of the Church and the People” (Patriarch Josyf “Testament”);
conducting, on the occasion of family celebrations and anniversaries of married life, appropriate divine services and offering sermons-instruction on the beauty and value of Christian marriage;
organizing family pilgrimages to prominent spiritual centers of the UGCC in Ukraine and abroad.
To take into consideration the work of the Patriarchal Liturgical Commission of the UGCC on updating the text of the Archieratikon, and to ask members of the Synod of Bishops of the UGCC to submit their comments to this text by October 15, 2025 A.D.

Members of the Ukrainian Community - especially a large group from Holy Eucharist Cathedral parish - brought a proud Ukrainian presence to the annual Surrey Fusion Festival. The multicultural festival of nations, now in its 18th year, filled Holland Park in the city of Surrey, British Columbia, with colour, music, amazing food and just a lot of great fun and joy for families and all people of goodwill.
Ukraine’s Laskavo Prosymo pavilion offered arts, crafts, books, great traditional Ukrainian food and just fine, smiling hospitality for all visitors that stopped by.
