Daniel Sintos, who has been loyally serving at Holy Eucharist Cathedral parish for some years now, was officially appointed a Cantor and Reader just prior to the Sunday Divine Liturgy. In fact, he was leading the praying of Matins up to that point – something that he has done for years now as well as learning the tones and cantoring for weekly vespers and the Sunday English Divine Liturgy. His dedication and enthusiasm led Cathedral Rector, Very Rev. Fr. Mykhailo Ozorovych, to request that Daniel be officially acknowledged and elevated through the minor orders of Candle-Bearer, Cantor and Reader.
At the ceremony, Fr. Mykhailo served the role of “Archdeacon” leading Daniel forward toward the Altar where the latter bowed three times. As he stepped forward, Bishop Michaelplaced his hand on Daniel’s head and began the prayers of the rite. Daniel was then handed a candle and he began the common “beginning prayers” and then sang the troparia verses in honour of the Apostles, the three holy hierarchs Basil the Great, John Chrysostom and Gregory the Theologian as well as for the Mother of God.
Then the tonsuring occurred where the bishop snipped some hair from Daniel’s head at four points ‘cross-wise’ and then placed, over his shoulders, a cape referred to as a “short phelonion”. The prayer at this moment reads in part…
“O Lord God Almighty, receive Your servant, Daniel, and sanctify him; enable him with all wisdom and understanding to read and to study Your divine words, preserving his life spotless.”
The bishop then presented Daniel with a book of the Epistles [which sometimes includes the essential prokeimena, alleluia verses and Sacred Scripture designations for the liturgical year]. As is the custom for readers. Daniel made his way to the middle of the church and read the Epistle from Acts of the Apostles 6: 1-7.
Finally, the Bishop presented him with the stykharion (dalmatic) which he donned with the help of Subdeacon Ryan Bjorgaard. As this is the conclusion of the appointment ceremony, the Bishop prays, “….it behoves you to read the Sacred Scriptures and to strive daily after virtue, so that those who observe and listen to you may be inspired to do likewise. Never allow any blemish to disgrace the Order which you have received. Living peacefully in righteousness and holiness, you shall find favour with God…” Then Bishop Michael intoned the declaration of the “Axios” [he is worthy!] in which the entire congregation joined in.
We are pleased that Daniel Sintos had made this selfless step for service of the Cathedral parish. May the Lord bless him with continued dedication and opportunity to serve!

The event was carried out with exceptional spiritual depth and organizational excellence, demonstrating the unity of our community and the strong support for the mission of the Eparchy.
Guests had the opportunity to experience an atmosphere of sincerity and inspiration, enriched by the performances of the talented bandura musicians Heorhiy Matviiv and Mariia Smolinska. Their artistry added beauty and nobility to the evening, reminding everyone of the enduring power of Ukrainian music.
A meaningful part of the program was the iconography workshop led by iconographer Serhii Kolodka, a graduate of the Lviv National Academy of Arts. His work and explanations opened for participants the profound spiritual dimension of iconography as a form of prayer born from love for God and for people.
The central moment of the evening was the address delivered by the Eparch, Most Rev. Bishop Michael. His message, filled with spiritual strength and pastoral wisdom, strengthened all present in hope, trust in Christ, and our shared mission of service. His words brought a sense of peace, grace, and spiritual upliftment to the entire gathering.

Центральним моментом став виступ Єпарха, Преосвященного Владики Михайла. Його слово, сповнене духовної сили та пастирської мудрості, укріпило всіх у надії, довір’ї до Христа та спільному служінні. Промова Владики наповнила залу відчуттям миру, благодаті та внутрішнього піднесення.

There were several Holodomor memorial events throughout the territory of the Eparchy of New Westminster during the Holodomor Awareness Week 17-23 November. On Sunday, every Parish throughout Canada commemorated the victims of the Holodomor at the morning Divine Liturgies and held a moment of silence and some, even a ceremony. The actual day to commemorate the Holodomor is the fourth Saturday of November – which fell on the 22nd of November this year. Many civil events took place on that day.
Bishop Michael Kwiatkowski was invited to participate in a Holodomor Commemoration at the grand auditorium of Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral in downtown Vancouver. Part of the reason for an annual commemoration being held at the church, besides its great central location, is that a copy of the now famous Holodomor memorial statue - Гірка пам'ять дитинства / The Bitter Memory of Childhood by sculptor Petro Drozdovsky - is kept at that location as it awaits an appropriate installation in the Greater Vancouver area.
The Sunday afternoon program included amazing song selections by choirs, including Lyrika, … poetry recitals by a large group of children and… amazing musical performances by the “Suzir’ya” String Quartet. Several speeches and messages of support were given, including Order of Canada recipient David McCann and the President of the British Columbia Council of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress - Iryna Shyroka.
Bishop Michael and the pastor of Holy Trinity Cathedral, Fr. Roman Tsaplanspoke a few words to the sad occasion and then asked everyone to join in the Lord’s Prayer led by the choir. They spoke of how we must truly be strong in prayer and in our vigilance to diffuse the hatred and prejudice that led to the horrible Holodomor that saw the Russian Communist Soviet Regime attempt a genocide of the Ukrainian People by intentionally starving to death millions upon millions of men women and children.
Besides the heartbreaking commemoration of the Holodomor and the millions of innocent victims who perished in this genocide, participants were faced with the sad reminder that after a decade of appealing to the powers that be at all levels of government - the Ukrainian community of Vancouver was still struggling to be granted an appropriate corner somewhere in the entire greater Vancouver area for the little girl statue to be erected.
We remember the horrific Holodomor – especially the millions of victims… even as hundreds of thousands more are being killed and maimed and their homeland destroyed in Ukraine at the hands of the same perpetrators of the famine. Remember them in your prayer. Pray for peace and that we all would be inspired to be instruments of the that peace - in our daily lives.
On the previous day, Saturday 22 November 2025, staff, parents and students of the Eparchial school “Ridne Slovo” also participated in a large Holodomor Commemoration in Downtown Vancouver with various displays, presentations and messages. The Vicar General of the Eparchy of New Westminster, Very Rev. Mykhailo Ozorovych lead the crowd in a Panakhyda requiem service for the repose of the millions of souls of those who died in 1932-1933 man-made famine.
Це знов та пора року — четверта субота листопада — коли ми збираємося, щоб згадати жахливий геноцид, який було вчинено менше століття тому. Ми згадуємо мільйони українців: дітей, молоді, чоловіків та жінок, людей похилого віку, абсолютно схожих на нас, яких змушували помирати, і спостерігати, як помирають члени їх родин та сусіди — повільна, безжальна, жахлива смерть від голоду! Жертвами Голодомору були звичайні люди — працьовиті сім'ї… батьки та матері, які намагалися заробити на життя… бабусі й дідусі… наречені… молоді люди, які навчалися та дивилися з надією у майбутнє… маленькі діти, радіючі дивами життя. В ті темні часни, як це трапляється час від часу, деякі з тих, хто прийшов до влади обманом, наклепом та грубою силою, обіцяли краще життя… життя, яке всі повинні прийняти, інакше їх буде знищено. Вони просували свою позицію, не переконуючи правдою, логікою та прикладом, а нав'язуючи свої ідеологічні переконання за допомогою жорстоких законів та кари за їх невиконання.
Була жорстока помста проти тих, хто не прийняв їхньої версії політики. Вони почали сегрегувати та маргіналізувати верстви суспільства. Вони почали зі спроби підкорити маси за для покори, а потім заморити їх голодом до повного знищення, намагаючись стерти будь-які сліди української ідентичності та пам'яті. Результатом стала жахлива смерть мільйонів і мільйонів невинних душ.
Сьогодні ми, понад усе, молимося за мільйони невинних людей — які могли б бути нашими братами та сестрами, дітьми та дорослими, нашою родиною — які загинули в голоді, трагедії, спричиненій людською жорстокістю та злобою.
Голодомор 1932–1933 років був не лише трагедією для України. Це була жахлива катастрофа, яка залишила шрами на душі людства.
Ми не маємо права забувати цієї трагедії. Забути, було б другою смертю для них, закатованих і духовною смертю для нас. Згадуючи, ми не лише продовжуємо пам'ять про тих, хто був знищений, ми захищаємо правду від брехні. Памятаючи, ми голосно кричимо на весь світ «ніколи більше»!
Це так важливо, оскільки та сама сила, яка організувала Голодомор, тепер повернулася, намагаючись завершити свої геноцидні наміри. Це так важливо, оскільки ми бачимо спроби повторити подібні жахи протягом усієї історії. Винуватці та їхня логіка можуть відрізнятися, як і цільові жертви, яких вони вбивають, також змінюватимуться з часом. Але метод завжди однаковий! Ненависть і наклеп сили, яка їх вчиняє, часто несподівані та непомітні. Жертв також застають зненацька, оскільки передбачувана мета є надто немислимою. Важливо, щоб ми пам'ятали та нагадували собі про Голодомор, не допустили його повторення. Нажаль, він може статися знову, якщо ми не будемо пильними, ми мимоволі можемо допустити, щоб це знову сталося. Не лише одна зла людина та її збройні сили спричиняють Голодомор, Голокост, геноцид Вірменії чи Руандії. Це також самовдоволення, страх і брак моральної стійкості з боку ширшого населення, які не оскаржують нелогічні та помилкові аргументи та не засуджують початкові залякування та осуд.
Тож сьогодні схилимо голови у спільній молитві за упокій замучених душ Голодомору та незліченних інших жертв. Помолімося за кінець жахливої війни, яка зараз ведеться проти України, за зцілення народу та за перемогу істини. І нехай наша молитовна пам'ять, хоч трохи, поступово, сприятиме зціленню глибокої рани, що досі гноїться після Голодомору, та відновленню зруйнованої довіри, яка має існувати між людьми.
Господи, прийми наш біль у Твою милість, і нехай світло Твоєї істини засяє над Україною та над усіма землями, і нехай усім людям буде дарована благодать побачити Твоє світло та прийняти його.
Вічна пам'ять усім жертвам Голодомору.

It is that time of the year - the fourth Saturday of November – when we gather to remember the horrible genocide visited upon humanity less than a century ago. We remember the millions of Ukrainians – children, youth, men and women, the elderly people exactly like us - forced to die, and watch family members and neighbours die - a slow, heartless, terrifying death by starvation. The victims of the Holodomor were ordinary people - families, hardworking people, fathers and mothers trying to etch out a living, grandparents, fiancés, young people learning and looking toward the future, little children mesmerized by the wonders of life. Then, as happens from time to time, some who rose to power by deception, calumny and brute force, promised a better life… a life that all must accept or be eliminated. They promoted their position, not by convincing with truth and logic and example, but by forcing their ideological convictions with laws and brutal enforcement.
A harsh revenge was taken against those who did not accept their version of politics. They started to segregate and marginalize groups in society. They began with attempts to scare the masses into submission, then to eliminate them by starvation in an attempt to snuff out any traces of their Ukrainian identity and memory of existence. The result was the horrific death of millions upon millions of innocent lives.
Today, above all, we pray for the millions of innocent people — who could have been our brothers and sisters, children and adults, grandfathers and grandmothers — who perished in the famine, a tragedy conceived by human cruelty and malice.
The Holodomor of 1932–33 was not only a tragedy for Ukraine. It was a monstrous catastrophe that scarred the soul of humanity.
We have no right to forget. To forget would be a second death for them and spiritual death for us. Recalling this period, we not only continue the memory of those who were destroyed, we defend truth from falsehood. In remembering, we raise the cry of “never again”!
This is so important, because the same force that orchestrated the Holodomor has now returned in an attempt to complete their genocidal intentions. This is so important as we see attempts to repeat similar horrors throughout history. The perpetrators and their logic may vary, as the intended victims will also vary over time. But the method always the same! The hatred and calumny of the perpetrating force is often unexpected and subtle. The victims are also taken by surprise as the intended goal is too unthinkable. It is important for us to remember and remind ourselves of the Holodomor, to never let it happen again and to remind ourselves that it can happen and, if we are not vigilant, it will happen. We must also not delude ourselves into thinking that it was only one evil man and his armed forces that brings about the horror --- a Holodomor or a Holocaust or an Armenia Genocide or one in Rwanda. It is also the complacency and fear and lack of moral fortitude on the part of the wider population that does not challenge the illogical and fallacious argumentation and does not denounce the initial bullying and censuring.
So today, let us bow our heads in a common prayer for the repose of the tortured souls of the Holodomor and of countless other victims. Let us pray for the end of the horrible war now being waged against Ukraine and for the healing of the people, and for the victory of the fullness of truth. And may our prayerful remembrance, in some small, incremental way, contribute to toward the healing of the deep wound still left festering from the Holodomor and toward the mending of the broken trust that should exist between God’s children.
Lord, receive our pain into Your mercy, and may the light of Your truth shine upon Ukraine and upon all lands and may all people be granted the grace to see the Your light and embrace it.
Eternal memory to all the victims of the Holodomor.
