UKRAINIANS REPRESENT AT SURREY CULTURAL FESTIVAL

Members of the Ukrainian Community - especially a large group from Holy Eucharist Cathedral parish - brought a proud Ukrainian presence to the annual Surrey Fusion Festival. The multicultural festival of nations, now in its 18th year, filled Holland Park in the city of Surrey, British Columbia, with colour, music, amazing food and just a lot of great fun and joy for families and all people of goodwill.

Ukraine’s Laskavo Prosymo pavilion offered arts, crafts, books, great traditional Ukrainian food and just fine, smiling hospitality for all visitors that stopped by.

One of the exciting moments was the “Parade of Culture” at the opening of the Festival that made its way to the “World Music Stage” with flags, signs, dazzling costumes and bursts of national pride and joy! See a glimpse of Ukrainians in the parade in the video clip provided!

The Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church for 2025 Concludes in Rome

On Thursday, July 10, the 2025 Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, held at the Ukrainian Pontifical College of St. Josaphat in Rome, officially concluded. The Synod of Bishops of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church for 2025 Concludes in Rome

On the final day, following lunch, the bishops gathered in the meeting hall, where Archbishop Ihor Vozniak, Metropolitan of Lviv, thanked His Beatitude Sviatoslav for his leadership of both the Church and the Synod. Bishop Andriy Khimyak, Secretary of the Synod, expressed his gratitude to the Synod Secretariat staff, Zhyve Television, and the rector, students, and staff of the Ukrainian Pontifical College of St. Josaphat for their dedication and hard work in ensuring the Synod’s success. He also thanked the retreat master, Fr. Taras Babiy, for his spiritual reflections during the Synod and presented him with an icon of the Holy Family.

Afterward, accompanied by the singing of “Abide among us, Christ, abide among us,” the bishops, together with the Head of the Church, processed from the meeting hall to the chapel of St. Josaphat, where they sang Ukraine’s spiritual hymn, “God, Great and One.”

As is tradition, the youngest bishops carried the candle and the Holy Gospel in the procession: Bishop Michael Smolinski of the Eparchy of Saskatoon, Bishop Michael Kwiatkowski of the Eparchy of New Westminster, and Bishop Volodymyr Firman, Auxiliary Bishop of the Eparchy of Ternopil-Zboriv.

The official communiqué and resolutions of the 2025 Synod will be published later on the official UGCC website.

Tomorrow, July 11, the Permanent Synod of the UGCC will convene at the Ukrainian Pontifical College.

5th World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly – July 27, 2025

“Blessed are those who have not lost hope” (Sirach 14:2)

In 2021, Pope Francis established the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly to be celebrated every July near the liturgical Memorial of Saints Joachim and Anne, the grandparents of Jesus. This special day honours the wisdom, faith, and enduring love of our elders — the spiritual pillars of our families and Church communities.

This year, we will mark the day on Sunday, July 27, 2025, under the theme:
“Blessed are those who have not lost hope” (Sirach 14:2)

This theme invites us to recognize and cherish the hope-filled witness of grandparents and the elderly — those who remain steadfast in their faith, even in the face of trials, and continue to share their strength and love with the next generation.

📽️ A 1-minute video, filmed in St. John’s, Newfoundland, beautifully captures the joy of intergenerational encounters between children and their grandparents.

🔔 How We’re Celebrating in Our Parish
On Sunday, July 27, 2025, we will offer a special prayer during the Divine Liturgy for all grandparents and elderly members of our community — especially those who have passed the faith on to us.

💬 We invite everyone — especially families with children and youth — to join in this prayer and celebration of gratitude for those who have shaped our lives with wisdom and love.
