Episcopal Coat of Arms of Bishop Michael Kwiatkowski 

Bishop Michael wanted three basic images and themes to be included in his coat of arms: the Our Lord through the Holy Eucharist, by which we profoundly become one with Christ and find the source and summit of our Faith (Christ our Pascha, 390); the Mother of God, especially his favourite icon of the Mother of God of Vysh’horod – ever interceding for God’s People; and the Archangel Michael, his life-long patron and the one who defends the glory of God. The motto chosen is the concluding phrase of Joshua 24:15, “We Will Serve the Lord”

These three images were developed by the President of the Ukrainian Heraldry Society of Ukraine, Dr. Andriy Hrechylo, to be represented by appropriate symbols. The three 8-pointed stars on a field of blue as would be found on icons of the Mother of God – representing her purity and ever-virginity. The sword and scales of the Archangel Michael who defeats evil and has a role in the judgement of souls. The Holy Eucharist is represented almost identically to the symbol of “Lamb” host and Chalice as depicted on the coat of arms of the Eparchy of New Westminster.

The surrounding mitre, mantle, staff and processional cross signify the episcopal office.

Владика Михаїл хотів, щоб на його гербі були три основні образи і теми: Господь наш через Пресвяту Євхаристію, через яку ми глибоко з’єднуємося з Христом і знаходимо джерело і вершину нашої віри (Христос – наша Пасха, 390); Божа Матір, особливо його улюблена ікона Вишгородської Богородиці – неустанна заступниця Божого народу; і Архистратиг Михаїл, його покровитель і той, хто захищає славу Божу. Обраним девізом є заключна фраза Ісуса Навина 24:15 “[А я та дім мій] Служитимемо Господеві”

Ці три зображення розроблені президентом Українського Геральдичного Товариства д-ром Андрієм Гречилом для представлення відповідними символами. Три 8-кутні зірочки на блакитному полі, як і на іконах Божої Матері, символізують її чистоту і непорочності. Меч і ваги Архангела Михаїла, який перемагає зло і бере участь у суді над душами. Пресвята Євхаристія представлена майже ідентично символу “Агнця” та Чаші, як зображено на гербі Єпархії Нью-Вестмінстера.

Навколишні символи митри, мантії, жезла та процесійного хреста означають єпископський стан.

Всечеснішим отцям, преподобному монашеству, усім українського походження та людям доброї волі:

Дорогі брати і сестри у Христі!

Сьогодні календар відрахував рік з того часу як розпочався новий етап російсько-української війни з особливою брутальною жорстокістю та руйнуванням, циніцтністю та брехнею. Кожний день відліченого року є повторенням 24 лютого, додає до гіркої статистики втрат і помножує пережите горе. Тисячі невинних людей і дітей втратили своє життя, багато було закатовано, мучаться у тюрмах і таборах, примусово вивезені. Мільйони змушені поневірятися по світі, часто втративши все, і шукають притулку далеко від того, де колись був їхній дім. Стерто з лиця землі багато міст і сіл, слід від яких залишиться в історії та пам’яті тих, хто жив там. А скільки глибоких душевних ран від втрат, пережиття, туги за рідними завдала війна тим хто вижили і потерпають, особливо дітям! 

Ця війна не обмежується битвами зброї, але торкається боротьби сумління, духовних цінностей та ідеалів з усім злом, яке несе війна. Передусім вимагає від кожного чіткої визначеності на чиїй стороні – добра чи зла, ми є. Вона виступила мірилом нашої любові до рідного краю, свободи, добра і прав людини, даруваних нам Всевишнім, ба навіть самої щирості нашої любові до ближнього і Господа Бога. Відбувається відкриття та глибше усвідомлення нашої ідентичності і самобуття як народу так і кожного українця в Україні та поза її межами. Ті, що хочуть призупинити цей процес і насаджувати свої так звані “цінності”, які протиречать християнським правдам віри, засадам нашої духовності та культури, шукають усіляких підступних шляхів досягнути своїх цілей.

Ми, греко-католики Канади, разом з усіма людьми доброї волі цілого світу закликаємо наполегливо протистояти поширенню зла, війні, вбивствам невинних людей, руйнації та знищення народу в Україні. Черпаймо нашу силу у Господі повсякчасно у нашій боротьбі (Пс. 26:1). Як сказав св. Апостол Павло, підпережімся поясом віри та візьмімо броню справедливості, щит віри, шолом спасіння і духовний меч, щоб “дати відсіч хитрощам диявольським” та “проти начал, проти властей, проти правителів цього світу темряви, проти духів злоби в піднебесних просторах” (Еф. 6:11-12). Палка і постійна молитва до Господа є нашою зброєю супроти якої ворожі сили є безсилими, а ми черпаємо нею ласку і благодать Божу. Молімся, щоб не піддатися почуттям безвиходу та пригнічення, надмірних клопот та турбот (Пс. 137:7).

Візьмімо ближче до серця слова псалмопівця: “Для моєї ноги Твоє слово світильник, то світло для стежки моєї” (Пс. 118:105) та дослуховуймося слова Божого у нашому житті. Воно вчить нас добра, правди, любові, вирозуміння та правильності рішень, які деколи важко прийняти у стані глибокого пережиття та втрати. У слові Божім знайдемо Бога, який є поруч, співстраждає з людиною, потішає та зціляє.

Робімо діла милосердя для потребуючих в Україні та тимчасово переселених у Канаді як скромний вияв нашої щирої віри та більшої слави Божої. Ділімся добром, яким Господь нас благословив, часом і талантами, знаючи, що все вернеться сторицею. Даючи дочасне добро тепер, ми отримуємо вічне добро. Як ніколи, нам потрібно підтримати один одного молитвою, добрим словом та ділом. Людина, яка отримала щось через вас, буде дякувати Господеві і повсякчас славити Його. “Нехай ваше світло так світить перед людьми, щоб вони бачили ваші добрі діла та прославляли вашого Небесного Отця” (Мт. 5:16).

В солідарності та співчуттям з нашими братами і сестрами в Україні, які терплять від браку їжї, води та інших необхідних речей повсякденного життя, проведімо сьогоднішній день та усі п’ятниці у пості та стриманні, щоби також пригадати собі наскільки ми є благословенні, живучи в мирі і спокої в Канаді.

Результат цієї війни є дуже важливим і матиме глобальне значення. Нам потрібна лише перемога, яка є дуже реальною коли спільно докладемо усіх зусиль. Єднаймося, молімся, працюймо над собою та загального добра! Нехай цей Великопосний час буде чудовою нагодою для духовних звершень і поступу до перемоги!

Нехай Господь Бог благословить увесь український народ на батьківщині та цілому світі. Нехай Всевишній Господь скріпить нашу віру, подасть доброго здоров’я та підтримку багатьох людей доброї волі. Нехай Господь Бог дарує перемогу над злом та мир Україні!

AN APPEAL BY THE UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC BISHOPS IN CANADA MARKING THE ONE YEAR COMMEMORATION OF THE RUSSIAN INVASION OF UKRAINE

 To the Reverend Fathers, Religious Sisters, Venerable Monastics, People of Ukrainian Descent, and all People of Good Will:

“You shall not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day…” [ps. 91:5]

Dearly Beloved in Christ!

Today, on our calendars we mark a year since a new stage of the Russian-Ukrainian war began with brutal cruelty and destruction, cynicism and falsehood. Every day of the past year has been a repetition of February 24, adding to the bitter statistics of losses and multiplying the grief experienced by many. Thousands of innocent men, women and children have lost their lives; many have been  tortured, held in prisons and camps, and forcibly deported. Millions are forced to wander around the world, having lost everything, seeking refuge far from their homes. Many cities and villages have been erased from the face of the earth, leaving only traces in the history and memory of those who lived there. Countless are the deep emotional wounds from the losses, tragic memories, and longing for relatives, inflicted by the war on those who survive and are suffering – especially the children!

This war is not limited to the context of armed battles, but also occurs in the struggle for consciences, spiritual values and ideals with all the evils that war entails. Most importantly, it requires from everyone a clear  choice for good or evil. The war challenges us to demonstrate our love for Ukraine, for its God-given freedom, political and human rights. War challenges the very sincerity of our love for our neighbor and the Lord God. Every Ukrainian in and outside of

Ukraine  is called to discover a deeper awareness of his or her national, political  and ethnic identity. The enemy are those who want to stop this process and plant other values which contradict the truths of the Christian faith, the foundations of our spirituality and our Ukrainian identity. And they are looking for all kinds of insidious ways to achieve their goals.

We, the Ukrainian Catholics in Canada, call upon all people of good will to steadfastly resist the spread of  the evils of war, the killing of innocent people,  and the destruction of the nation of Ukraine. Let us draw our strength from the Lord at all times in our struggle (cf. Ps. 26:1). As the Apostle Paul says , let us gird ourselves with the belt of faith and take the armor of justice, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the spiritual sword to “resist the wiles of the devil” and “against the principalities, against the authorities, against the rulers of this world of darkness, against the spirits of malice in the heavenly spaces” (Eph. 6:11-12). Fervent and constant prayer to the Lord is our weapon against which enemy forces are powerless, and with it we draw the grace of God. We pray not to succumb to feelings of hopelessness and oppression, excessive worries and cares (cf. Ps. 137:7).

Let us take the psalmist’s words, “Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path” (Ps. 118:105) closer to heart and listen to God’s voice in our lives. The word of God teaches us goodness, truth, love, understanding and ability to make right decisions that are sometimes very difficult, especially during times of deep tragedy and loss. In His word, we will find God who is near to us in solidarity, offering us comfort and healing.

Let us continue our works of mercy for the needy in Ukraine and those who seek refuge here in Canada, as a humble manifestation of our sincere faith and for the greater glory of God. In doing so, we share the time and talents with which the Lord has blessed us, knowing that everything will return a hundredfold. By giving temporal goods now, we will receive eternal goods in the future.

In solidarity and compassion with our brothers and sisters in Ukraine, who continue to suffer from the lack of food, water and other basic necessities of life due to the ongoing war, let us renew our practice of fasting and abstinence to remind ourselves of the many blessings we enjoy in our peaceful, daily lives here in Canada.

More than ever, we need to support each other through prayer, kind words and good deeds. A person who receives something through you will thank the Lord and praise Him always. “Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Heavenly Father” (Mt. 5:16).

The outcome of this war is crucial and will have global significance and consequences. We pray for victory, which will be realized only when we put all our efforts together.  Let us unite, pray, and work for the common good! Let this Lenten season be an opportunity to reach new spiritual heights and to better ourselves so that we can carry out our part in bringing to an end the tragedy of war.

May God bless the Ukrainian people both in their homeland and throughout the world. May He grant them the strength of a strong Christian faith, of enduring  good health and the support of a multitude of people of good will. May He grant victory over evil and peace to Ukraine!

Working towards Reconciliation and Healing with our Indigenous Brothers and Sisters

Today, through a series of pastoral letters to First Nations, Inuit, Métis, and the People of God in Canada, the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) affirmed its ongoing commitment to renewing and strengthening relations with Indigenous Peoples at the national, regional, and especially the local level.

Each of the distinct pastoral letters in this series, entitled That We May Walk Together, is the fruit of many months of listening, dialogue, and encounter with Indigenous Peoples, especially through Listening Circles held in dioceses across the country, the Indigenous Delegation to the Vatican in April 2022, and Pope Francis’ Apostolic Voyage to Canada in July of the same year.

Having heard from Indigenous Survivors, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Youth, and inspired by the witness of Pope Francis during his “penitential pilgrimage” in Canada, who encouraged Canada’s Bishops to continue walking with Indigenous People’s along the path of truth, justice, healing, reconciliation and hope, these letters present a framework for local engagement by Bishops with Indigenous Peoples in their dioceses/eparchies, including:

  • Continuing to dialogue and discern the most effective mechanism by which respectful and fruitful collaboration can continue at the national, regional and local levels;
  • Fulfilling a pledge, made at the 2021 CCCB Plenary Assembly, to undertake fundraising to support locally-discerned projects through the Indigenous Reconciliation Fund (which has raised over $9 million so far and is on track to meet its five-year, $30-million commitment);
  • Supporting opportunities to make Indigenous culture more widely known, including by working with Catholic educational institutions, seminaries, religious houses, and programs of pastoral formation;
  • Accompanying Indigenous Peoples in the pursuit of justice, according to the spirit of the United Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as well as Catholic Social Teaching;
  • Working together with local community leaders to address social challenges, including addictions, suicide, violence, poverty, and incarceration;
  • Celebrating the great role that women play in many Indigenous faith communities; and
  • Identifying new forms of responsibility within dioceses/eparchies to which Indigenous Elders could be invited to share their spiritual wisdom.

In addition, in the Pastoral Letter to the People of God, the Catholic faithful are invited to join their Bishops, in a spirit of love and service, as the local churches take tangible steps toward reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples in view of a new era of encounter and dialogue.

The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB) is the national assembly of the Bishops of Canada. It was founded in 1943 and officially recognized by the Holy See in 1948.

The War in Ukraine: A Call to Prayer, Fasting, and Action

Dear Faithful,

The war in Ukraine rages on with no end in site, claiming the lives of thousands of innocent children, men and women, with millions more on the move as refuges in search of safety, food, shelter, clothing and medicine, in addition to the destruction of countless homes, schools, hospitals and business. As winter approaches, hundreds of thousands of people will have no heat in their homes, with energy being used as a weapon of punishment.

 

Ukraine and its people are in crisis. Like the Holodomor-Genocide or Ukrainian Famine of 1932-1933, which claimed the lives of millions of people in Ukraine when the Soviet Union deliberately and methodically starved as many as one-quarter of the Ukrainian population, today’s war in Ukraine by foreign aggressors has as its intent to erase the identity and history of the Ukrainian people – a genocide in the making.

 

In light of the recent intensified attacks, let us renew our attention to the plight of the people of Ukraine in an effort to continue to “Stand with Ukraine.”

 

In particular, let us renew our efforts to pray, fast, and act.

 

Prayer

 

Prayer is the privilege and duty of every person where we worship and praise the Lord God and bring forth our immediate needs and concerns.

 

We, the Ukrainian Catholic Bishops in Canada, invite you to renew your efforts to pray daily for peace in Ukraine.

 

Let us pray for those who endure the war, who defend their country and nationhood, who live in fear, and who have been forced to flee their homes.

 

Let us pray for those who have died as a result of the war, and for those who have died today and who will die tomorrow.

 

Let us pray:

 

O Lord Jesus Christ, our God, we entreat You to hear the earnest prayer of Your beloved Church of Kyivan Rus’ for her afflicted children abiding in the land of Ukraine. Deliver Your vulnerable people from unjust aggressors, foreign invasion and the terror of war. O kind-hearted Lord, as You are our peace, soften the hearts of the unmerciful and convert those who promote hostilities toward reconciliation, so that your beloved children of the land of Ukraine, may abide in that tranquility, justice and freedom which reflects your Kingdom, where You reign with Your eternal Father, and Your most holy, good and life-giving Spirit, now, and forever and ever. Amen.

 

Fasting

 

The age-old practice of fasting is a means to spiritual growth and purity of heart.

 

Through fasting we recall the failure of Adam and Eve to fast from the forbidden fruit thereby leading to their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Through fasting, we resolve to renew our lives according to God’s ways and laws.

 

We, the Ukrainian Catholic Bishops in Canada, invite you to fast for the people of Ukraine and for peace in their country. Like the Holodomor Ukrainian Famine in 1932-1933, many people in Ukraine today have no food. In solidarity with them, let us fast.

 

In particular, we invite you to a three-day fast starting on Thursday, November 24, concluding on Saturday, November 26, when we commemorate the Holodomor annually throughout Canada.

 

Fast as best as you can. For some, that will mean only bread and water, for some no sweets, for others only one meal each day. However you choose to fast, unite your thoughts and prayers before the Lord for peace for the people of Ukraine.

 

Action

 

Almsgiving is a charitable way of expressing gratitude to God for the bounty of God’s blessings in our daily lives.

 

Almsgiving is also a way to identify with the needs of others and respond in some meaningful way.

 

We, the Ukrainian Catholic Bishops in Canada, acknowledge and thank you for your unprecedented generosity in providing humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine. May God bless your kindness and generosity!

 

Yet, today, as winter approaches, the people of Ukraine need your support evermore.

 

We invite you to consider a further humanitarian aid donation so that the people of Ukraine may have the basic necessities in life that each of us enjoys – food, shelter, clothing, and medicine, as well as heat, for their homes this winter.

Kindly donate through your local parish, Catholic Near East Welfare Association – Canada (CNEWA), Development and Peace – Caritas Canada, Aid to the Church in Need – Canada, Canadian Jesuit International, or the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.

 

Conclusion

 

The purpose of this pastoral letter has been to raise our awareness of the ongoing war in Ukraine and to invite you to prayer, fasting, and action towards our brothers and sisters who are in desperate need of your support.

 

These are not easy times. The entire world is ill at ease.

 

Yet, together we can make a difference in the millions of lives of the children, men and women who are counting on you.

 

May God bless you and your family with health, peace, love and joy.

Війна в Україні шаленіє без видимих ознак завершення, забираючи життя тисяч невинних дітей, чоловіків і жінок і змушуючи мільйони українців залишати домівки у пошуках безпеки, їжі, прихистку, одягу, медикаментів через втрату зруйнованого житла, шкіл, лікарень і підприємств. З наближенням зими сотні тисяч людей також будуть позбавлені опалення у своїх помешканнях, оскільки енергоносії сьогодні перетворюються на засоби тиску і покарання.

 

Україна і її народ – у кризі. Схоже до того, як у свій час Геноцид-Голодомор 1932-33 років, який позбавив життя мільйонів людей в Україні, коли Радянська влада свідомо і методично заморила голодом чверть українського населення, сучасна війна в Україні, спричинена зовнішнім агресором, має на меті стерти ідентичність і саму історію українського народу, стаючи таким чином новим “геноцидом в дії”.

 

У світлі нещодавніх ще інтенсивніших ворожих нападів, давайте разом заново привернемо увагу до важкої ситуації в Україні, намагаючись продовжувати  “стояти з Україною.”

 

Зокрема, давайте заново докладемо зусиль до молитви, посту і активних дій.

 

Молитва

Молитва є водночас привілегією і обов’язком кожної особи, яка через прославу Господа Бога доносить до Нього наші безпосередні потреби і занепокоєння.

 

Ми, Українські католицькі єпископи Канади, закликаємо вас відновити старання стосовно щоденної молитви за мир в Україні.

 

Давайте молитися за тих хто потерпає від війни, хто захищає свою країну, хто живе в страху і тих, хто був змушений залишити свої домівки.

 

Давайте молитися за тих, хто загинув через цю війну, тих, хто загинув сьогодні і тих, хто загине завтра.

 

Помолімось:

 

Господи Ісусе Христе, Боже наш, благаємо Тебе вислухати щиру молитву Твоєї улюбленої Церкви Київської Русі за її засмучених дітей, які потерпають в Україні. Звільни Твій наражений на небезпеку народ від несправедливого агресора, нападу чужинців і терору війни. Добросердний Господи, джерело нашого миру, умиротвори серця немилосердних і наверни тих, хто пропагує ворожнечу до примирення, щоб Твої улюблені діти української землі могли проживати у такому спокої, справедливості і свободі, які завжди панують у Твоєму Царстві, де Ти царюєш зі своїм споконвічним Отцем і Твоїм благим і животворящим Духом нині, повсякчас і на віки віків. Споконвічна традиція посту є потужним засобом духовного росту і очищення серця.

 

Через піст ми пригадуємо невдачу Адама і Єви стриматися від забороненого плоду, що призвело до їхнього вигнання з Едемського саду. Через піст ми постановляємо відновити свої життя згідно Божих доріг і законів.

 

Ми, українські католицькі єпископи Канади, запрошуємо вас постити за український люд і за мир у їхній країні. Як у часи Голодомору 1932-1933 років, багатьом людям в Україні сьогодні бракує їжі. Тож давайте постити у солідарності з ними.

 

Зокрема, запрошуємо вас до трьох-денного посту від четверга, 24 листопада до суботи, 26 листопада, в часі коли ми у Канаді щороку відзначаємо пам’ять Голодомору.

 

Постіть так, як ви найкраще можете. Для декого, це може бути лише хліб і вода, інші – можуть відмовитися від солодощів, у той час коли хтось може обмежити споживання їжі до одного разу на день. Як би ви не вирішили постити, нехай ваші думки і молитви перед Господом будуть за мир для українського народу.

 

Активні дії

Милостиня – є практичним харитативним способом виявляння вдячності Богові за обильні Божі дари в нашому щоденному житті.

 

Милостиня – це також можливість ідентифікувати себе з потребами інших і здатність реагувати на ці потреби у конкретний осмислений спосіб.

 

Ми, українські католицькі єпископи Канади, цінуємо і висловлюємо вам вдячність за вашу безпрецидентну щедрість у наданні гуманітарної допомоги людям з України! Нехай Господь благословить вашу доброту і щедрість!

 

Однак сьогодні, в часі наближення зими, український народ потребує вашої підтримки ще більше.

Ми запрошуємо вас розглянути можливість подальшої гуманітарної допомоги, яку буде потрібно спрямувати на забезпечення базових життєвих потреб людей в Україні, всього того, чим кожен з нас втішається тут у Канаді – їжа, дах над головою, одяг, медикаменти як і тепло у їх помешканнях цієї зими.

Ми живемо у нелегкі часи. Весь світ є хворим.

 

Однак разом ми можемо зробити суттєвий внесок у життя мільйонів дітей, чоловіків і жінок, які розраховують на нас.
